Fit Matters: Finding (and Keeping) a Job You Love
Work fit matters both to an organization’s success and to an individual’s happiness. Looking ahead, the match between employee and employer in terms of engagement, satisfaction, and productivity will matter more than ever. Through stories, research and exercises, participants in this session discover the conditions they need to make the right work match. Utilizing a high level of interaction and reflection, this session will prompt attendees to think differently about their own work future.
For anyone seeking to land a job at a company today, it is a complex world. No longer do organizations promise long-term engagement or promotion paths. “Great places to work” initiatives market employers well with glossy projections of perfect environments and policies, when inside the walls things often look very different under scrutiny. Faced with lower wages, global competition, increasing numbers of college graduates, and escalating benefits expenses, the employee of tomorrow faces a gauntlet of challenges in securing the right place to sign-on to a job that will last. And for those that start to work for the wrong company prematurely, the costs are staggering: underemployment, long un-employment, unhappiness, dissatisfaction, stress, and frustration are shockingly expensive for individuals, families, and their communities.
Carrick has a passion for helping inspire perfect matches between people and organizations. Through sharing stories and research, she builds the case for why employee engagement is critical to an organization’s success and an individual’s happiness. Carrick offers a manifesto for work fit for individuals and companies to practice to create a world of work that works for everyone.
Participants use exercises to evaluate their strengths and the work conditions they need to thrive. They learn techniques for discerning what an organizational culture is before they agree to start a new job and what to do if they find themselves in the right or wrong place. A chance for creative reflection and fun that can help attendees plot a course toward real joy and connection in their work.
Moe Carrick, Founder and Principal of Moementum, Inc. an Oregon based consultancy and Certified B Corp believes that people make organizations great. Companies large and small are routinely brought to their knees by the “soft stuff” of people problems, and Carrick has made it her life’s contribution to help people thrive in the companies for which they work. She grounds her approach in a unifying and undeniable truth: successful work is dependent on human relationships.
Carrick is passionate about the role work plays in creating meaning for our lives and in the role business can play as a force for good. A Master’s level OD practitioner, Carrick is also a Certified Daring Way Facilitator utilizing the work of Dr. Brene Brown to transform how we live, work, and lead.
Carrick is a regular blogger on topics related to people at work and is a contributor to Conscious Company Magazine. Maven House Press released her first book, bestseller FIT MATTERS: How to Love Your Job, with co-author Cammie Dunaway in 2017. Her second book, Bravespace: Creating Workplaces Fit for Human Life, releases in June 2019.
